How Clean is Your Toothbrush?

It is important that you brush your teeth at least twice a day to maintain good dental health. But did you know that good brushing hygiene begins before you even pick up your toothbrush? The way that you store and maintain your toothbrush can affect your oral hygiene and overall health.

Keeping the toothbrush in an upright position where the brush can dry out prevents the growth of bacteria or mold on your brush. It is recommended that you store your toothbrush in a dry location with a steady airflow, so avoid placing your toothbrush upside down in a cup or laying it in a closed cabinet. You should also keep your toothbrush away from the toilet, as airborne particles could settle on your toothbrush.

In between brushes, it is a good to wash your toothbrush to maintain its cleanliness. Rinse the brush off and soak it in antibacterial mouthwash to kill bacteria. Another option is to run your toothbrush through the dishwasher. This is also important to do when you first purchase a new toothbrush, as the packaging is not sterile and bacteria may already exist on the toothbrush. If you are ill, it is especially important to thoroughly sanitize the toothbrush between uses and recommended to use a new toothbrush after the illness is past.

Another habit to avoid is sharing a toothbrush with anyone else, even with family members. This practice fosters the transfer of harmful bacteria, such as bacteria that cause teeth to decay.

Just like almost everything we come in contact with, your toothbrush will not be completely sterile, but it is important to take proper care to keep your toothbrush as hygienic as possible. If you would like to learn more about proper brushing and toothbrush storing techniques or have any questions, we invite you to contact our office today.
